The PSLE English Oral examination is coming up on 12 August 2026, and if you're wondering how best to support your child at home, you're not alone. Many parents feel unsure about where to start — and that's completely okay.

What the Oral Exam Covers

The English Oral examination has two components:

• Reading Aloud — Your child reads a passage clearly and expressively, demonstrating good pronunciation and pacing.

• Stimulus-based Conversation (SBC) — Your child is shown a visual prompt and asked to share their thoughts, opinions, and personal experiences in response to the examiner's questions.

Both components reward children who are comfortable speaking — and that's something you can actively help build at home.

3 Ways to Help Your Child Prepare

1. Read aloud together every day

It doesn't have to be long — even 5 to 10 minutes with a book, a magazine, or a news article makes a difference. Take turns reading a paragraph each, and gently correct any mispronunciations as you go. Keep it relaxed; the goal is to build confidence, not pressure.

2. Make conversation a daily habit

The SBC rewards children who can express their opinions naturally and clearly. A simple way to practise? Talk over dinner. Ask your child questions like "What do you think about kids spending so much time on screens?" or "If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be?" There are no wrong answers — it's about getting them used to thinking out loud.

3. Use pictures to spark a conversation

This mirrors what your child will experience in the actual exam. Pick a photo from a newspaper or magazine, show it to your child, and ask: "What do you see? What do you think is happening here?" Then follow up with a question or two. It's a simple exercise that builds exactly the skills the SBC is looking for.
