A Level Economics (9757/8818) Syllabus

What will students learn during the economic tuition classes?

The exam preparation for A Level Economics starts with the understanding of the syllabus requirements, which are set by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). The economics tuition programmes will guide students through the process of knowing what to expect at the examinations, such as the growing emphasis on real world applications. Also, students will learn to appreciate the value of studying economics, such as making rational individual and business decisions.

H2 Economics (9757)

For H2 Economics (9757), students will be assessed in two papers, whereby Paper 1 focuses on Case Study Questions (CSQs) and Paper 2 delves in Essay Writing.

Examination Structure

For Paper 1, students must attempt two CSQs, in which one is from Microeconomics and the other tests Macroeconomics. For Paper 2, students must attempt at least one question from Section A (Microeconomics) and Section B (Macroeconomics). The third essay question can either be from Section A or B.

Syllabus Content

The H2 Economics syllabus content is separated into two parts: Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. For Microeconomics, students will study Central Economics Problem, Demand and Supply, Cost of Production, Market Failures and Market Structures. For Macroeconomics, students will learn Economic Indicators, National Income Determination, Economic Growth, Inflation, Unemployment, Aims of Government, International Trade, Balance of Payment, Foreign Exchange, and Globalization.

H1 Economics (8818)

In contrast to the H2 Economics, H1 Economics (8818) students will be assessed only in one paper, in which there are two case study questions and one essay to be completed.

It is important for students to avoid holding the notion that they can spot topics, such as focusing only on Microeconomics and neglecting Macroeconomics. In the recent years, the A Level Economics examinations essay questions tested Macroeconomics only.

Syllabus Content

For the syllabus content of H1 Economics, all the chapters covered are similar to H2 Economics, except that the following chapters are omitted, namely Cost of Production, Market Structures, and National Income Determination.
