A Level Chemistry (9729/8873) Syllabus

What will students learn for this subject?


The A level Chemistry is a demanding subject that requires students to master many new and complex chemistry concepts. Besides that, students will need to apply their knowledge to a varied situations as brought out by the examination questions. Students will have to get familiarised with MCQs, structured questions, and free-response questions that demand high analytical skills to ace.

H2 Chemistry (9729)

The H2 Chemistry (9729) consists of 4 papers.

Paper 1 Multiple-Choice Questions

In Paper 1, students are required to complete 30 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) within 1 hour. This paper takes up a weightage of 15% of the overall grade.

Paper 2 Data-Based Questions

In Paper 2, students are required to answer around 10 – 14 structured questions, including data-based questions that test on higher order thinking skills. Students are given 2 hours to complete the paper. Data-based questions tend to involve introducing new chemicals which students may not be familiar with but require them to deduce certain knowledge based on what they have learned from the two-to-three years course of study. This paper takes up 30% of the overall grade.

Paper 3 Free-Response Questions

In Paper 3, students are required to complete two section within 2 hours. Section A consists of 3-4 compulsory free-response questions that involve the integration of different topics learned in the syllabus. Section B consists of 2 questions which students have to choose 1 to answer. This paper takes up a weightage of 35% of the overall grade.

Paper 4 Practical Assessment

Paper 4 is known as practical assessment. It assesses the skills of students, in terms of planning, manipulation, measurement and observation, presentation of data, analysis and evaluation. Students are given 2 hour 30 minutes to complete the assessment, which occupies 20% of the overall grade.

H1 Chemistry (8873)

The H1 Chemistry (8873) consists of 2 papers.

Paper 1 Multiple-Choice Questions

In Paper 1, students are required to complete 30 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) within 1 hour. This paper will take up a weightage of 33% of the overall grade.

Paper 2 Data-Based Questions

In Paper 2, students are required to answer structured questions, including data-based questions that test on higher order thinking skills. Data-based questions tend to involve introducing new chemicals which students may not be familiar with but require them to deduce certain knowledge based on what they have learned from the two-to-three years course of study. Students are also required to answer 1 free response questions that involve the integration of different topics learned in the syllabus. This paper takes up a weightage of 66% of the overall grade.
